Why it’s Important to be Yourself

Aside from the obvious reasons (like being true to who you really are) using your real voice when blogging, FB’ing, twittering, etc, means you actually stand out.
There is a great article in last month’s INC magazine about the importance of honest business writing. In short, the article addresses an issue very near to my heart, why most corporate writing is so awful and such a waste of everyone’s time.
Why? Because NO ONE EVER READS IT BECAUSE IT’S ALL THE SAME AND IT DOESN’T ACTUALLY MEAN ANYTHING! Typical corporate language is so vague and banal that no one, (except the author) makes it through the article. It’s just filler.
Want someone to read what you have to say? Be honest, use your own voice and think about what some one wants to read.
This may mean a frank opinion about your market. It could be a rant or a rave. Use humor, use suspense, use startling facts or insights, use kittens. Just use something that makes your post stand out. Whatever you do, ask yourself this question before you hit ‘publish’: “if someone else wrote this, and I could either read this post or watch Lost, which would I do?”
That will tell you if it needs to be published in the Round File or actually sent out into the world.

Props for the use of Round File in an actual post.
