Security Settings, or, “Whoa whoa whoa. I don’t want all my office mates to see my kids’ birthday party”

*DISCLAIMER- At the time of this writing (July 2010), Our dear friend Mark Zuckerburg (the CEO of Facebook) is taking a lot of heat for the security settings on Facebook. While we do keep up as much as we can with this stuff, it literally changes daily. We have listed the basics, but be aware things can and probably will change.

  1. Security per Post – When you upload something, notice the little lock icon right next to the Share button. Clicking here will let you specify who can see that post (whether that post Is a photo, photo album, link, etc etc etc.)
  2. General Security - We always get this question. While we have never had any problems with stalkers, hackers, Russian Mafia, etc, we do make a point of being careful with what we put up on Facebook. Is it going to make you mom uncomfortable? Don’t put it up.

*Good rule of thumb- Don’t be a moron. If it’s going to compromise your security (let’s say posting your address and all the shiny new electronics you just bought), don’t post it.  This is a public profile, exercise good sense and you should be fine.

i. Adjusting your Security Settings – At the top right, click on Account > Privacy Settings. This will let you customize who can see what. You can also create “Lists” of your friends and control who sees what. This is particularly useful for keeping work stuff and personal stuff separate. More on lists shortly.

**Again, this stuff changes daily. We do our best to keep you informed of changes, so check our website for updates.
